aLM Architects was recently awarded a Commendation in the prestigious Design Idea Competition for the Redevelopment of the SK10 Public Market in Seri Kembangan, organized by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) through Majlis Bandaraya Subang Jaya (MBSJ), in collaboration with the Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM).

The competition attracted 91 submissions from architectural firms across Malaysia, highlighting the significance of public markets as community anchors and sustainable urban infrastructure. aLM Architects was honored as one of the top ten finalists, standing out for its sensitive and inventive approach to place-based design.

Their proposal thoughtfully integrates practical sustainability with cultural memory, celebrating the unique identity of Seri Kembangan. Facades are lined with traditional bamboo blinds, serving both functional and cultural roles: shading the interiors while creating space for hand-painted signage that supports and showcases local artisans and businesses.

The roof form, drawing inspiration from vernacular buildings in the region, incorporates a blend of solid and translucent panels that enhance natural daylighting and promote passive ventilation. These design gestures are not just aesthetic—they form the backbone of a marketplace rooted in community values, enabling vibrant daily use while preserving a strong sense of place.

This commendation marks another milestone in aLM’s growing portfolio of public and community-focused projects, reinforcing the firm’s commitment to contextual, human-scaled, and socially responsive architecture.
